Our Programs

Food SoverEignty

We’re excited to work with Waimea High School on our farm project, Na Mahi Ho’oko A’e. High school students will have to opportunity to work hands-on through different classes including design, engineering, science, and math. The students will be involved in all aspects of the farm from design, harvesting, packaging, marketing and sales.

Using traditional farming methods combined with aquaponics farming techniques we hope to be a model for individuals and businesses alike. The farm grows produce which is sold to over a dozen of Kauai’s westside businesses, as well as directly to community members through our grocery store at MTC.

The farm also provides work opportunities for community members as well as a site for agriculture internships through various programs such as Alu Like and the County of Kaua’i.

Community enrichment

Cultural exchange is a core program of our organization and is an incredible way for our Kaua’i youth to meet other indigenous communities as well as host other groups on Kaua’i to provide a rich exchange experience. We currently partner with several groups and organizations in California, Washington, and Montana, and others throughout Hawai’i.

We also host several camps and events throughout the year like community races and sports camps for all ages to encourage healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities for our community to come together. We host basketball and track camps during the year, and host coaches and athletes from off-island to mentor our youth. Although the students come for the sports specific skills, they foster deep connections with our coaches and trainers about all aspects of life.

Physical Wellness

Makana Training Center is located in Waimea and is a community gym aimed at providing an open, old-school style fitness center without the bells-and-whistles (and intimidation!) of a commercial gym. You can feel confident coming in to achieve your health and fitness goals. Period.

In addition to open gym membership we also offer group fitness classes throughout the week and we are always looking to add new class opportunities to our schedule.

MTC is also a host for strength and conditioning practices for several of the Waimea High School and community athletics teams including Track and Field, Paddling, Soccer, and Baseball.

Cultural Education

We have several programs throughout the year geared toward education related to cultural practices and traditions. By reconnecting to our roots we can get stronger individually and as a community. Mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health all rely on connectedness to our history, our land, and to each other. We integrate the cultural connection into any and all of our programs, camps, and events.
